UK Car Emissions Fall 5.6 Per Cent Figures Show

New figures show that car emissions in the UK has fallen by 5.6 per cent in the past 12 months, signalling a positive boost in the industry's environmental goal for cleaner cars.

A new study by DrivenData Ltd found that currently the average carbon emissions are 170.75g/km.

This figure is down from the 180.90g/km recorded in August 2009.

The company claimed that it represents the fastest drop in emissions made by manufacturers in a 12 month period during the past five years.

Manufacturers are working towards a government target to reduce car emissions to an average of 130g/km of CO2 by 2012, but based on this year's figures, emissions will still be 152.16g/km by this date.

However, a predicted uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) and other alternative fuel solutions could bring this figure down even further next year.

Daniel Stas from DrivenData, commented: "Much will depend on the emergence of plug-in hybrids and EVs, which means the government needs to commit wholeheartedly to funding an alternative fuel recharging network in the UK."
