Greater Manchester entrepreneurs have won honours in a national awards scheme which recognises and rewards the "pioneers" of the internet.

The founders of Manchester-based design and technology consultancy Building Blocks scooped the top accolade in the Digital Entrepreneur Awards.

Andy Iddon and Jonathan Whiteside were named digital entrepreneurs of the year for their efforts in developing the business in the last four years and winning clients including Warner Leisure Hotels and Butlins.

Al Mackin, chief executive of Trafford Park-based search engine optimisation agency TheEword, won the young entrepreneur of the year award.

Manchester design agency magneticNorth, was honoured in the design and marketing category. Didsbury mobile software firm Myriad picked up the mobile category accolade.

The awards are organised and sponsored by Manchester web hosting company UKFast. Lawrence Jones, chief executive of UKFast, said: "It's a privilege to be involved in an event that recognises the innovators and entrepreneurs that are changing the face of the internet as we know it.

"There are some fantastic companies involved in the awards and it is truly inspiring to see the north west represented so well."
