The social networking site aimed at professionals, LinkedIn now features one-third of all business people in the UK.
The site has had an additional one million users in the past eight months within the UK alone. This means that LinkedIn is adding one member every second across the world on average.
The social media site is often used by businesses for recruitment, for example
Microsoft saved an estimated £60,000 when putting together a team to reverse-engineer viruses. By using LinkedIn the software giant was able to find candidates with specialist IT skills from right across Europe.
Some are putting the rise of subscribers to the site down to the recent global economic downturn leading to an increased unemployment rate and more job hunters.
