Android OS Overtakes Apple

Global sales of mobile devices has reached 325.6 million units in Q2 of 2010 - an increase of 13.8 per cent compared to last year.

Research firm Gartner have published a report which shows that smartphone sales have grown by more than 50 per cent, accounting for 19 per cent of worldwide sales of mobile devices.

The Android smartphone operating system , overtook Apple's iOS to become the third most popular OS for smartphones worldwide. This bring them in just behind Research in Motion (18 per cent) and Symbian (41 per cent) and this brings Android out on top smartphone OS.

Carolina Milanesi, research vice-president at Gartner says, "Launches of updated operating systems will help maintain strong growth in smartphones in the second half of 2010 and spur innovation. But we believe market share in the OS space will consolidate around a few key OS providers that have the most support from [mobile telcos] and developers, and strong brand awareness with consumers and enterprise customers."

The survey has also shown that Nokia, Samsung, Research in Motion (the creators of blackberry) and Apple are maintaining top positions for mobile device sales.
