another embarrassing outage at PayPal

PayPal went down again last night for about four hours, at one of eBay's busiest times. The payment service went offline at 6.30pm UK time. The company blamed a network hardware failure for the problem.

The payment system's last bout of downtime was less than two months ago in late June. Back then it blamed a botched upgrade. The payment provider apologised and said the problem started at 10.30am Pacific Time and was all sorted out by 3pm.

eBay paid $1.5bn for PayPal in 2002.
