BBC to sell online ads outside the UK

The BBC will add advertising to its online news platform, BBCNews.com, in all of its markets except for the UK.

The platform will support video and banner advertising, and operate among five regions, namely Europe, Asia, North America, Southeast Asia and Africa. The site will relaunch in September but advertisers will be able to target specific countries or news genres from the start of next year.

“Our audiences are senior executives, frequent travellers and heavy holiday spenders,” said James Chue, senior account executive, BBC Worldwide, Global Channels Asia-Pacific.

The website, as with BBC broadcasts, will remain free of advertising in its native UK.
