Bill Gates and Guardian Launch New Website

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have joined forces with Guardian News & Media (GNM) to launch a website dealing with global development issues.

The website will sit on the Guardian's main page and will cover topics including poverty, hunger and infant mortality. It is intended to hold governments and NGOs to account for the implementation of the United Nations millennium development goals - a commitment made by 192 countries in 2000 to eradicate global development issues by 2015.

Editor-in-chief at GNM, Alan Rusbridger said that the media often neglect long-term development stories. "It is essential to have a place where some of the biggest questions facing humanity are analysed and debated, and through which we can monitor the effectiveness of the billions of pounds of aid that flows annually into the developing world," he said.

Nobel prize winner Amartya Sen and American economist Jeff Sachs are amongst 20 of the world's leading development experts who are already supporting the website.
