Britain becomes Europe's biggest user of broadband

Britain has overtaken France as the biggest user of broadband in Europe, according to the internet consultancy Point Topic. It estimates that the UK has 9.8m broadband lines, France has 9.7m and Germany is in third place.

While the world's biggest user remains South Korea, the UK leads Europe for the first time. But the survey suggests growth is slowing: Britain added just over 1m lines in the first quarter of 2005 but below 860,000 in the second quarter and while the third showed a rise - to almost 900,000 - Point Topic reckons only 940,000 have signed up in the last three months.
