Cost comparison sites ‘are baffling’

Websites which claim to be able to find the cheapest prices for consumers were criticised yesterday for coming up with hugely varying results.

Online firms like uSwitch are used by people who want to find the cheapest suppliers of anything from mortgages to gas.

But the study by pollsters Mori found there was no agreement between sites over who provided the cheapest deals.

Consumer watchdogs claim that some of the firms make millions of pounds a year in paybacks from companies they recommend.

However, uSwitch defended its record, saying it helps to protect consumers from high prices and has signed an industry code of practice.
