EBay helps stop mobile phone thefts

EBay is teaming up with the Met Police to help stop stolen mobile phones being sold on the Internet. The Internet auctin site is joining forces with the Met's National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU) to ban any listings for blocked or barred handsets.

The move follows a joint operation to arrest eBay users attempting to sell stolen handsets. The investigation saw 20 warrants executed and 13 arrests made in the Greater London area.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick McNally of the NMPCU said he hoped the initiative would also reduce the number fo street muggings, adding: 'If thieves cannot sell thed items, the drive to steal them will be significantly reduced.'
