Facebook Turns Off Lite Site

After just seven months online, the "lite" facebook site which was aimed at users with poor internet connections, has been taken offline.

Facebook released a message today saying that they had "learned a lot from the test of the slimmed-down site."

Ray Valdes of Gartner Research stated, "I think a lot of the Facebook experience was left out of Lite, especially the monetisable parts."

He continued, "The other part of this decision is probably because they have improved the performance sufficiently with the main part of Facebook and made things run better that they didn't need this back-up approach to cover a situation of low performance."

The Facebook lite program did not allow for users to add applications or use the boxes feature but did allow for writing others walls and posting photographs.

Mike Mendalson of ReadWriteWeb stated, "In some ways the Lite version was like using ad block on their own site - it stripped the site down to the very basics."

Facebook announced the change earlier today on its own website, along with some key reasons for the shift.

"It would seem not enough people were using it but then there was not a lot of awareness about the product. Tears will not be shed over the loss of Facebook Lite," said Nick O'Neil of AllFacebook.com
