Google Launches App Store

Google has today announced that it will open the Google Apps Marketplace to developers and offer cloud-based applications.

More than 50 companies will be involved in the marketplace, producing applications which will work on a third-party basis, integrated within Google.

Despite a great deal of media hype, cloud computing has been slow to take off. However Google looks set to change this by creating a wealth of new cloud applications under their trusted name.

Product manager Chris Vander Mey announces in blogspot, "The Google Apps Marketplace eliminates the worry about software updates, keeping track of different passwords and manual syncing and sharing of data, thereby increasing business productivity and lessening frustrations for users and IT administrators alike."

Google is determined to challenge Microsoft as the chief operating system on the web. Although it already offers several applications such as Google docs, Gmail and Google Calendar, the new apps look set to offer a whole host more.

Business focussed software such as project management, tax and payroll programmes, an electronic fax program, an e-signature service, and a design tool for Google Docs will soon be available.

Following the successful release of Google Chrome, this Apps Marketplace is said to be the next logical step for Google towards becoming a software company.
