IBM to expand in India

IBM is planning to lay off 5,000 US employees and transfer many jobs to India. This falls in line with the company's plan to build up its work base in overseas locations.

Mike Fay, spokesman for IBM did not however, immediately confirm or comment upon the job cuts plan. The strategy is said to target the company's global business services unit that deals with a host of jobs from running corporate data centres to managing human resources for clients.

Overseas workers now account for 71% of IBM's 400,000 workforce, up from 65% in 2006.

If it comes through, this would be the second wave of layoffs in IBM this year.
