Man Fined For Friend Request

A man has been fined £200 for inviting a woman to be his friend on social networking site Bebo, breaching his bail conditions not to contact her.

Barry Gillies sent the request to Sally Ann Gray after a special bail condition had forbid him from contacting her.

He also admitted trying to email Ms Gray, and was fined following these two contact attempts on the 8 and 9 March.

Fiscal depute Janine Bates said Mr Gillies first attempted contact with Ms Gray the day that his bail was accepted, emailing her and pleading for her to give him another chance.

Bates said: "The next day at 2.58pm and 10.06pm he sent messages asking if he could be friends with her on her Bebo page."

Mr Paul Ralph, Gillies Solicitor stated: "I suppose it means there wasn't any face-to-face contact.

"He seems to have learned his lesson about what the bail conditions mean. He now knows how he has to conduct himself if the relationship is to continue."

William Gilchrist the sentencing sheriff, said: "The communications were not offensive or threatening, but they were a breach of your conditions of bail.

"What is serious is that you did it on the day the conditions were imposed and then again on the day after."
