Nginx Overtakes Microsoft to Number Two Web Server

Nginx, the lightweight open source web server software, is now the second most used server software in the world.

According to the Netcraft Web Server Survey for January 2012, NGINX gained 1.9 million active sites, expanding their overall market share, as Google, Microsoft and leading software Apache all saw losses.

The survey shows that Nginx is not the only major web server vendor to gain market share this month but it has also set a new all-time high of 9.63 per cent and saw the second largest absolute growth with an addition of 6.9M hostnames.

With financial backing from the likes of Michael Dell and other venture capitalists, Nginx has made quite a splash since its creator Igor Syosev, along with Andrew Alexeev, co-founded the company less than a year ago.

According to Netcraft, Nginx now runs on 12.18 percent of all active websites - sites with unique content that aren't generated from templates - for a total of around 22.2 million sites.

In all, Netcraft found over 582 million websites for the January 2012 survey; around 18 million were active.

There is an interesting article on Pingdom forecasting the growth of Nginx over the next year. Its expected to pass IIS for "Servers Across All Domains" by March/April and then on towards Apache next year perhaps!?

Wonder if Microsoft are worried? Will result in a lot less Windows servers being sold.
