Skype launches on Mac and Linux

Skype today launches versions of its software for Mac and Linux users. The Voice over Internet Protocol firm launched in August 2003 claims to already have more than 23 million users and 130,000 new users signing up every day.

Users download Skype software, which enables them to make phone calls over the Internet. Calls to other Skype users are free; and international calls to ordinary or mobile phones are charged at local rates. Skype also allows conference calls and file transfers.

The beta version of the Mac software has been on offer since August 2004.

Skype have also just been awarded the prestigious accolade of Overall Winner in the Tornado 100 list, a critical selection of the 100 best-performing and innovative high-tech private companies of Europe and Israel in the past year.
