Twitter Adds URL-Sharing Tweet Button

Micro-blogging service Twitter has rolled out a button platform which will allow users to share web pages.

The Tweet Button feature will allow site administrators to embed a button within their web pages. When clicked, the button will open a window allowing the user to preview and then post the link as a Tweet.

For site publishers, the button will also include a counter which lists the number of times a URL has been displayed on Twitter, both through the Tweet Button and through links posted in other Tweets.

In a blog post introducing the new feature, Twitter spokesperson Carolyn Penner highlighted the ease with which publishers can deploy the Tweet Button.

"The Tweet Button is not only simple for users, but for publishers of all sizes, too," wrote Penner.

"Recreational bloggers to large media companies can quickly and easily add the Tweet Button to their sites."

Among the sites which are supporting the Tweet Button upon its launch are YouTube, WordPress, Ask.com and The Onion.

The company also said that it had struck a deal with TweetMeme, which currently offers its own Twitter-sharing button. The Twitter Button will completely replace TweetMeme buttons and the company will shift its focus to Tweet traffic analysis tools.
