Twitter growth explodes in a year

Figures show the number of people using Twitter has increased dramatically in the last year.

Celebrities and world figures alike are using the platform. Public figures with Twitter accounts include Barack Obama, Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand.

Market researcher, Nielsen Online, says Twitter grew by 1,689% from February 2008 to February 2009 so there are now more than 1.78 million people signed on.

This time last year the social networking site only had 100,000 members.

However, the social networking site still isn't as popular as Facebook, which is still far and away the leader. Facebook has 17.8 million users and steady, strong growth of 114%.
