UK Shoppers to Spend £56bn Online This Year


According to the IMRG's 10th annual report which analysed online sales, UK shoppers have spent an astounding £250bn online since 2000.

The IMRG, which specialises in the interests of British e-shoppers, has said that the UKs love affair with online shopping that shows no sign of slowing down, and has predicted that consumers could spend around £56bn in this year alone.

James Roper, IMRG chief executive has commented, "The combination of ease, convenience and 24/7 access is incredibly compelling."

He continued, "We expect to see that relationship strengthen over the coming decade and by 2020 we predict that the internet will account for half of all retail sales and influence most of the other half."

The IMRG have predicted annual online sales in the UK will be worth around £123bn by 2021. However the report also states that in order to ensure these sales results companies will have to ensure the best possible customer service.

Chris Webster, vice president of Capgemini who co-wrote the study, said, "The change in shopping habits over the last decade has been phenomenal. The challenge for the next 10 years will be for e-retailers to increase their share of the market even further and come up with new ways to extend brand loyalty."

The IMRG and Capgemini have also released a list of the top 100 e-commerce firms, with Amazon topping the list, followed by Argos, entertainment store Play.com and Apple's web store.
