US Plans to Double Broadband Connections by 2020

The US government has announced plans to double broadband connections by 2020 especially focussing upon access in rural areas.

The new proposals are aimed at keeping up with the growing demand for high-speed video, audio and data transmission to mobile devices and will require an expansion of the broadband spectrum across the country.

Barack Obama is set to sign a presidential memorandum committing the federal government to auctioning off 500MHz of federal and commercial spectrum in the ner future to assist with this latest initiative.

It is hoped that these latest plans will act as a catalyst for private sector investment. Not only this but the National Economic Council director Lawrence Summers is optimistic that the initiative will contribute to economic growth and create jobs nationwide.
