Verizon Brag New One GBps Benchmark

Telecom provider Verizon is bragging about new performance benchmarks for its FiOS enterprise broadband service.

The company said that a trial deployment of the fibre-optic network was able to deliver speeds nearing one GBps. The Massachusetts-based network logged throughput speeds of 925MBps through the FiOS network.

The company said that the trials offer the first glimpse of what it hopes to deliver with FiOS in the coming years. Verizon believes that the trials show that FiOS has adequate bandwidth to deliver additional services both for enterprise and home users.

Brian Whitton, Verizon technology group executive director said, "This kind of bandwidth capacity will provide Verizon the ability to continue to meet FiOS customers' needs by offering more bandwidth to support services such as 3DTV, ultra HDTV, multiplayer gaming and HD video conferencing".

Other potential additions to FiOS could include remote backup and desktop virtualisation services.

Verizon is not the only company aiming to deliver customers a one GBps internet service. Google is set to begin a set of trials for a fibre-optic network of its own capable of reaching the one GBps mark.
