Yahoo celebrate innovation and eccentricity

Unveiled today is the Yahoo top 10 list, plucked by a panel of industry professionals from the sites 2004 catalogue of Daily Picks. This elite purports to represent the countries most entertaining, well designed and relevant sites in 10 different categories. Now it’s down to the British public to choose 2004’s Find of the Year.

The sites that captured the panels imaginations are:

Soapbox

eggbaconchipsandbeans.com - revel in the countries best greasy spoons.

Educational

youramazingbrain.org.uk – interactive illumination for the grey cells.

Community

timebank.org.uk – volunteer your time and skills for charity.

Pets & Animals

koko.org – conservation through communication with Koko the Gorilla.

Celebrity

bill-bailey.co.uk – step into the mind of one of Britain’s best comedians.

Hidden Gems

derelictlondon.com – the capitals hidden underbelly revealed with a melancholy poignancy.

Weird & Wonderful

uglycars.co.uk – dishing the dirt on Britain’s ugliest motorcars.

Innovative

Turning the Pages - offers access to a multitude of historical books.

Entertainment

weebls-stuff.com – lauded for its bizarre games and outlandish animation.

Travel

World Wide Panorama - beautiful 360 degree images of some of the planets most incredible places.

The selection shows an interesting mix of offbeat pages – naming the UK’s ugliest cars – and more traditional educative sites – such as youramazingbrain.org.uk. The factor that unifies them is the dynamic way they interact with the audience they attract.

Yahoo’s Daily Picks section has become a must for many, providing a portal to some of the webs more inspired and off the wall creations as well as bringing understanding of more worthy causes in the community and charity spheres.

One thing is for sure – the British public can’t help but be attracted to the bizarre. Metro Editor and judge for the competition Jonathan Goddard believes that the fact the top ten includes websites devoted to bacon and eggs, Bill Bailey and a communicating ape confirms that we are one eccentric nation.

You can vote for your favourite at the Find of the Year 2004 page.
